Obtiva’s own Kat-Nelson Reid was one of five judges and a mentor at Startup Weekend Chicago, an intensive, high energy event June 25-27 where business entrepreneurs pitch ideas, solidify concepts, brainstorm and create business plans. At the end of the event, judges select first, second and third place winners based on broadness and attainability of the market, sustainability of the plan, viability of the business model and growth potential.
The group broke out into nine teams that each created a new business. Top honors went to App Triumph, a website that lets students applying to colleges and grad schools easily navigate the process by centralizing all information necessary in one place. Winners were awarded cash prizes as well as goods and services.
“The startup world is a passion of mine,” Kat says. “The creative energy, the brilliant minds, the passion of these individuals – this is the stuff that motivates me. Mentoring the incredibly talented people there and judging their ideas was nothing short of awe-inspiring.”
